Tear Jerker / Ned Stark Lives

Go To

  • The death of Maester Luwin, even more now that the Stark family was able to tend to his mortal wound.
  • Robb Stark dying from his wounds inflicted by Ramsay, even after winning the trial by combat. The fact that he comes back to life at the end of the chapter doesn't help the fact that he dies in the books.
  • The fact that people that survived in the books die here, such as Ser Dontos (in the book saved by Sansa's suggestion that he could become the court fool) or Brienne (who was saved by Catelyn's intervention and witnessing of the shadow that kills Renly).
  • The death of Rodrik Cassel, though less horrifying than in the books, is just as tragic.
  • Daenerys loses control of her dragons to Euron Greyjoy and watches in horror as they burn people to death all around her.
    • Say what you want about Daario, but seeing him get incinerated in Dany's arms was pretty sad.
  • Cersei waking up to learn that Tommen is dead and later Jaime mourning him on the way to Highgarden. Myrcella begs her parents to stop pretending she's Robert's daughter and surrender so they can live in peace as a family, but Cersei is so stubborn and blinded by ambition that she won't listen to reason.
  • In Part III, Catelyn praying to the old gods underneath a heart tree and seeing Bran. Later in the same chapter she bursts into tears upon learning that Roslin died in childbirth.
  • No matter your opinion on Cersei, her reaction to Myrcella's death is a bit tearing. And then her heartbreak when she realizes that it is Jaime that is going to kill her.
  • Aegon's septa's and septon's reaction when Aegon dies. They had taken care of him since he was a child, and he died way sooner than he should have.
  • Jon's death.
  • The epilogue is a mix of heartwarming and this.
