A new dissipation - watching the happiness of others.
— a title card representing The Dear One watching other people's happiness right after she got her baby taken away.
  • The death of the Dear One's father.
  • The Dear One's life in general isn't very pleasant. She and her father have to move away from their original home, after cutbacks and a strike at the mill. She loses her father after the moved.
    • She then marries The Boy, who repents of his criminal ways for her, and after the Boy gives up those criminal ways, he's framed, arrested, and jailed, leaving The Dear One to raise her child alone.
    • The Uplifters accuse her of being a bad mother, just because her husband went to prison (for a crime he was framed for), then they took the child and give it to an orphanage, and even there they don't even bother to give the baby proper nourishment.
    • The Musketeer of the Slums (a gangster/pimp) takes advantage of the couple's struggle to get the child back and tries to rape the Dear One; he's shot dead by The Friendless One but the Boy is convicted of the crime and sentenced to hang...
  • The Boy getting framed by his former crime boss, the Musketeer, right after he gave up his criminal ways. Talk about unfortunate results. There's a reason why The Dear One was devastated to have to witness her own husband get dragged to person, and be helpless to do anything about it. The page image shows The Dear One looking at the cap The Boy had worn. It was what she had left to remind her of The Boy, her closest friend/husband.
  • Brown Eyes's death also qualifies.
  • The friendless one who was alone because of the strike that was happening at the moment. Plus she had a boyfriend who died, and gets abused by the Musketeer of the Slums.
  • To top it all off, none of the antagonists, get punished for their actions in the stories (Except the Musketeer).
