• Toby’s death. Anna sadly eulogizes him by noting that the world was cruel to him and hopes that the next one will be kinder, while the captain completely breaks down in grief. Becomes even worse and turns into Nightmare Fuel when he awakens as a vampire and is burned by sunlight as he's tossed overboard.
• Huckleberry the dogs death, as well as all the other animals on the ship.
• Anna and Clemens's final farewell to one another as Anna begins to turn just before the sun rises. It becomes painfully clear that even if there were a way to shield her from the sunlight, and even if she could stave off the hunger long enough to avoid killing Clemens and reach the shore, she would never want the life that would come from it.
