• Howard Beale, for all his fierceness and fire, is a man suffering from a nervous breakdown. And he gets attention, but not the medical kind: instead he is seen on TV as an attention-grabber and is exploited by the stations to bring in viewers.
• The affair with Max and Diana fizzles out because she is too driven to her career. Max eventually decides to sever and leave with some dignity to the both of them. The resignation from Max and the contrasting rage and desperation from Diana at their departure, is one of the saddest but also one of the best scenes in the film, as seen here.
