Tear Jerker / A Brief History of Histories

Go To

  • Usagi's quiet desperation to earn her father's love. She's completely convinced that the reason he doesn't ever spend time with her is that she's simply not good enough, and no matter how hard she tries, she just can't seem to improve enough... She keeps holding in all her rage and frustration, directing it at herself.
  • Chairman Tsukino meets Sailor Moon for the first time, praises her for saving his life... and then asks her name.
    • Followed by Usagi blaming herself for this. She's convinced that he recognized her even though she was transformed, and that he judged her heroics and still found her wanting.
    • Though Luna tries to comfort her by explaining that her Secret Identity is magically protected, she privately admits to herself that she has no idea whether or not that's actually the case. What's more, based on everything she observed about him beforehand, she can't dismiss the possibility that he did recognize Usagi and simply lied to save face.
  • Episode 2 shows just how hard Usagi's pushing herself, to the point that a youma nearly manages to drown her in a fountain.
  • Luna's attempts to ensure Usagi takes care of herself. Even the simplest gestures mean so much...
  • Usagi's sheer heartbreak when Luna tells her that she suspects Ami's actually a monster in disguise. Followed by her questioning if this means that the fact she actually passed a test for once isn't real, either.
  • Ami explaining what happened to her parents, and her current family situation. She expects Usagi to pity her like everyone else, but instead...
Usagi: My mother died when I was young, too.
Ami: I didn't mean to bring up anything bad for you. I just... we're a team, I thought you should know everything...
Usagi: We're not just a team, Ami. We're friends!
    Ami: Promise?
    Usagi: Promise.
  • Upon learning that her father's coming home early, Usagi stays up to meet him and presents him with a piece of the cake she and Ami made together. Tsukino-san proceeds to completely ignore her presence — and the cake — until finally:
Tsukino: Dear, would you run off to bed? Daddy's tired, and he can't concentrate on his work with you staring at him like that.
  • Usagi's father seems to want her isolated and friendless. The day after the above, he leaves on a business trip without forewarning and leaves a message with the cook and housekeeper that he wants her back by six every evening instead of out with friends (Ami). And also that she still isn't allowed to visit Hikawa Shrine.
    • What really kills about the above is that he could have easily discussed this with Usagi directly. She was sitting right there, eager for the chance to spend time with him. But he doesn't seem to be interested in spending time with his daughter; just giving her orders.
  • There are two in the second half of Episode 6. In Dreamland, youma Murid uses her hallucination attack that gives the victim a pleasant dream while she drains them. Usagi sees her father, apologizing for all the times he's missed with her, and saying that he's retiring from politics to spend more time with her.
    • This becomes even worse when Usagi reveals that today is her birthday when she breaks down crying at the end, because he's away on a business trip and hasn't called or emailed her.
  • Ami's obvious discomfort over the fact that Jadeite chose an airport for their battleground. When this leads up to her freezing up at a critical moment, Usagi puts it together and immediately starts kicking herself for not realizing it sooner.
  • Despite Ami's help, Usagi still struggles to keep her grades up, especially in her trickier subjects like English. Even though this is due in no small part to the stress she's under as Sailor Moon — and especially bad with the Jadeite situation — she keeps blaming herself, worrying that if her grades slip, she'll lose all the progress she's made... and Ami's respect.
    • When Sister Maria calls on her in English class, she completely flubs it, and her teacher tells her that "Since you clearly won't be getting anything out of today's lesson, go stand out in the hall." As Usagi leaves, she takes some small comfort in that nobody's laughing at her: they're all too used to it.
  • Chairman Tsukino takes his daughter to a fundraising dinner. It's an incredibly stressful affair.
    • She wears a white dress that her father gave her for her birthday last year, worrying the whole time that she'll ruin it somehow simply by virtue of being her.
    • From the moment they arrive at the dinner, Usagi struggles with her social anxiety, while her father immediately abandons her to go off and work the crowd.
    • When ordering their meals, she silently gushes over all the choices... then takes one look at her father and meekly orders the garden salad.
  • Usagi recieves a late birthday present from her father: a white dress, a vase of roses and a simple card, with a birthday message consisting of a single sentence: "Usagi, I wish you a happy birthday and all the best for the year ahead. Sincerely, Your father." Every year he gets her the same thing, and she rarely wears any of the dresses — once at most — because she believes they're too precious for her to risk ruining with her clumsiness.
  • When called into Sister Theresa's office, she automatically assumes she's in trouble, and doesn't know how to react to being praised for all her hard work.
  • Luna nearly breaking down while calling out Mission Control for not telling her about the Phantom Silver Crystal, even after Usagi worked out that the enemy might be after some kind of jewel.
Luna: "How can I help these girls? I can't even trust my own mind. How much of what I'm telling them is wrong? How much am I not telling them because I can't remember it? What's wrong with me?"
