It’s nearly time for Duel Academy's school duel against North Academy. Zane nominates Jaden. Not wanting Duel Academy represented by a red student, Crowler nominates Bastion, resulting in a duel to see who will represent the academy.
Tropes:
- Achilles' Heel: Bastion studies Jaden's deck and strategies and comes to the realization that fusing is the center of Jaden's deck. As such he uses "Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell Card", a trap card which prevents Jaden from using Polymerization for the rest of the duel.
- Adaptational Badass: In real life, Oxygeddon inflicts 800 damage if destroyed by an opponent's Pyro type monster. Here, Burstinatrix, a fire attribute monster, but not a Pyro monster triggers it all the same.
- Brains Versus Brawn: Or "intelligence versus instinct" as Zane puts it, with Bastion as the brains and Jaden as the brawn.
- Dub-Induced Plot Hole: Inverted. Gerard had dueling ruined for him from a duelist using the Skyscraper field spell. The Japanese version mentions his opponent was Seto Kaiba, which the dub omits. Since Skyscraper is only good in an Elemental Hero deck, it raises the question of why Kaiba even has it when it doesn't fit into his deck, unless he was using a Hero deck. With that being said, the dub didn't remove the images of Kaiba from Gerad's flashback, though the art style might make it challenging to spot him.
- Oh, Crap!: Gerard monologues to himself about accidentally giving Jaden, Syrus, and Chumley his real name.
- Wham Line: "I can't use Polymerization anymore?!"
