Go To

Alan's marriage with Kandi starts off with a bang, the couple winning half a million dollars from a slot machine. However, a few months later, the money's all gone and the marriage goes sour, and Alan's back out on the street after Kandi throws him out. Broke and miserable, Alan has no choice but to move back in with Charlie, again interrupting his bachelor's paradise.

Tropes

  • Didn't Think This Through: Jake says that he's never going to get married, having watched his father go through a marriage breaking down twice. He says he has a plan, where if a girl falls in love with him, he'll claim that he can't marry her until he has enough money, and will hide the fact that he's rich. When asked how he's going to be rich, he says he'll marry a movie star.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Alan spends several days locked in his room, curled up and moping over his second failed marriage and how his entire life is a mess. Charlie is so sick of it, he calls Evelyn and has her come over to snap him out of it.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Judith stops by Charlie's house to drop off Jake right after Alan's moved back in due to Kandi kicking him out. Even though he's obviously at a very low point in his life, her main priority is to inform him that he still owes her alimony even if Kandi cleans him out in the divorce. She then hands him a bill from her lawyer, who is charging him six hundred dollars for that 'explanation'.
  • On the Rebound: Charlie was forced to cancel his plans to marry Mia in the previous episode since he wasn't willing to tell Alan and Jake they had to move out of his house. This decision was clearly a hard one for him to make, and he was unhappy about losing the woman he genuinely seemed to love. Next time we see him, he's throwing a roaring sex party and bedding several women at once, and it's implied he's been plowing his way through a lot of women during the timeskip of a few months.
  • Side Bet: Several people had a pool going on how long it would take for Alan and Kandi's marriage to fail. Judith ends up winning it.
  • Status Quo Is God: Alan starts the episode happy, married, moving out of Charlie's house, and a few minutes in he's even rich. Charlie, meanwhile, is miserable over his relationship with Mia breaking down. Almost immediately, this massive change to the typical state of the characters is reverted, with Charlie going back to the bachelor's lifestyle with aplomb, while Alan spends all the money and gets kicked out by Kandi, having to move back in with his brother, now in an even worse situation than he was before.
  • Time Skip: After Alan and Kandi win the half a million dollars from the Vegas slot machine, the episode jumps forward a few months so we can get to a point where it's believable that they've burned through all the money and the marriage has fallen apart.
  • Tough Love: Evelyn goes to snap Alan out of his depressed stupor by talking about how his failures reflect poorly on her, and by stating that he's hit rock bottom and things can't possibly get worse. It's a little unconventional, but it works.
