Recap / The Monkees S 1 E 6 Success Story

Go To

Davy’s grandfather visits under the impression that he became wealthy in America. When it turns out to be a lie, he orders Davy to return to England with him.

    Full Recap
One morning, Davy receives a telegram from his grandfather, Mr. Jones (Ben Wright). He’s very pleased with Davy’s stellar success and is planning to visit for dinner that night. Although Davy loves his grandfather, he exaggerated how well he was doing in America because he paid Davy’s way through school and has high expectations for Davy’s future. The others decide that they can at least help Davy look the part for one night.

The other Monkees go out and talk their way into suitable uniforms and even manage to borrow a Rolls Royce for the day. Davy, in his best suit, rehearses his “staff’s” roles with them as his grandfather flies in. Davy’s friends, in disguise, ask for his autograph. A random lady decides Davy must be someone important and joins in, much to Mr. Jones’ approval and Davy’s confusion.

As the Jones family sits down to dinner, Davy’s friends try to warn him that they could only afford to serve actual food to Mr. Jones. Davy’s food is plastic. The situation goes downhill from there. Everyone the boys had talked to that day shows up at once to demand their belongings back. It reaches the point where Mr. Jones has to restore order himself. Exasperated, Mr. Jones asks Davy if there are any more bills he hasn’t paid – just as the power is cut off, leaving them in the dark. Extremely disappointed, his grandfather tells Davy he is obviously not ready to live independently.

The next day, Davy apologizes to his grandfather. Terribly upset and with two hours to go before the long flight to England, he takes a last walk alone on the beach. As soon as Davy leaves, Mike tells Mr. Jones how highly Davy thinks of him, and says Mr. Jones is putting his own loneliness ahead of Davy’s autonomy. Mr. Jones disagrees but stops to consider it when Mike walks away.

Song: "I Wanna Be Free" (slow version) Davy remembers the good times. Uses some of the same footage from the pilot episode.

Soon it's time to leave for the flight. Fighting back his feelings but still gracious as ever, Davy says goodbye to each of his friends. His grandfather watches while Davy takes one last look at them.

Out on the balcony, the remaining Monkees stand with their backs to each other as they try to pretend everything’s fine. Suddenly Mike turns to face them, openly crying, which sends Micky and Peter into a chain reaction along with him. Stopping to catch his breath, Mike announces, “Well, he just may never make that plane!” Immediately, they rush out the door.

At the airport, they're at their most disruptive. Micky is at the check in desk, making every requirement as difficult to manage as possible. Overloaded, Mr. Jones runs into Peter, who’s raving about Icarus while wearing a head bandage, a woman’s dress and wings. Mr. Jones is now desperate for a fast way to the plane and a sane, friendly face. Mike is happy to oblige in a shuttle cart, driving everywhere except to the boarding area while being chased by Peter and Micky.

When he finally catches up with Davy, his grandfather is thankfully more amused than angry. He tells Davy that he knows he can leave him safely with three such loyal friends. Davy says he’s sorry to let him travel to England all alone. His granddad says, “Oh, not necessarily…” as the lady from the arrival flight takes his arm and smiles.

Song: "Sweet Young Thing" The Monkees dance with some senior citizens.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big Damn Heroes: The Monkees recover from their heartbreak in less than half a minute and hurry to save their bandmate from getting on the plane.

  • Face-Revealing Turn: Played for Drama. Mike is the first to admit he can't handle the loss. Not only is he usually the most stoic of the group, but Davy always looks to him for help first.

  • Fake Food: The group couldn't even afford two servings of the dinner, so they gave rubber food to Davy with plastic fruit as the centerpiece.

  • Humiliation Conga: First the breakdown of the Monkees' deception when everyone comes to take back their things, then their tactic to irritate Davy's grandfather into flying home alone.

  • Mock Millionaire: Mr. Jones paid Davy's way through school, so he felt the need to reflect his grandfather's idea of success rather than explaining why he's actually happy.

  • Snowball Lie: The other three have to pretend to be Davy's staff by tricking different people in the neighborhood out of their uniforms and car.

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The scene after Davy leaves is a rare time in the series the group is shown talking together on the balcony, with the camera facing in from the outside.
