In 1968 a young, naive diesel arrived on Sodor to show what he could do. Unfortunately, he did more than he was asked.
The special contains examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: Of the book Duck and the Diesel Engine and the annual stories Old Square Wheels, Rusty Red Scrap Iron, and Galloping Sausage.
- Get Out!: The Fat Controller tells this to Diesel after he was founded out for framing Duck for making up nicknames.
- Good Cop/Bad Cop: Thomas and Percy respectively play these roles in getting the trucks to confess who originally made up those names.
- Heel–Face Turn: Diesel certifies his change of character by apologizing to Gordon, Henry, and James for making up those names about him, much to their shock.
- What the Hell, Hero?: The Fat Controller tells off Gordon, Henry, and James for causing a disturbance in accusing Duck of telling the trucks of the insulting names.
- Whole Episode Flashback: This is a retelling of Diesel's first visit on Sodor, specifically how Diesel came up with the names, and what happened while Duck was at Wellsworth.
