On their way to Blackthorn City, Ash and co. encountered the Lake Enlightenment. Team Rocket ambushed them while they were waiting underground. The two sides prepare were about to battle when a Slowpoke walked in-between them towards the edge of the lake to fish. A nun named Madeleine then appeared and explained to the group that Slowpoke was seeking enlightenment.
To learn more on the dopey Pokémon, Medaline offered to show them the temple she was studying in, dedicated to Slowpoke. As she taught the trails to attain enlightenment, Team Rocket noticed a giant golden Slowpoke statue. Before going to the last trial, Jessie and James excused themselves. While the rest of the group is away fishing at the Lake Enlightenment, the duo stole the golden statue. On their way, they were about to ram into the Slowpoke who was fishing earlier on, but it evolved into Slowbro and stopped the thievery with its psychic powers.
Ash and co head off to the next city, while Team Rocket is held back at the temple to do more training.
