Having made it back to Olivine City, Ash challenges Jasmine to a gym battle and this time, she's more than happy to accept. But will Ash be able to defeat Jasmine and her Steel-types?

Tropes

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Downplayed. Jasmine does have a strategy where Steelix uses Sandstorm as a temporary shield and diversion for it to dig underground and then attack with Iron Tail. However, unless pressed to change it, Jasmine is content for this to be her only strategy in the battle. This allows Ash to catch her off guard using her own strategy and nails a Flamethrower in a critical moment.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Jasmine uses Steel Pokémon, Magnemite and Steelix.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: This happens to Jasmine in two cases:
    • Her over-reliance on her digging underground strategy allows Ash to use the holes Steelix dug to catch it off guard.
    • In the climax, her use of Sandstorm initially protects it from Cyndaquil's Flamethrower but only until Cyndaquil manages to overpower it. This heats up the sandstorm and turns it into a fiery vortex that Steelix is at the center of.
  • No-Sell: The Wobbuffet statue is unharmed by Brock and Janina's Onix Tackle attacks. It takes Jasmine's Steelix make a dent.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Yet another episode where Pikachu's electric attacks harm a Ground type. Not as egregious as it clearly does minimal damage and it's unlikely the little damage it got off was the reason Cyndaquil won the bout.
  • Shock and Awe: Jasmine's first Pokémon, Magnemite, is part Electric-type.
  • The Unfought: Despite Janina claiming that Sparkle had healed up in the last episode, Jasmine does not use it in the gym battle. Instead, the main obstacle becomes her Steelix.
