Recap / 9-1-1 S3E3 "The Searchers"

Go To

The first responders continue to search and save the lives of those affected by the tsunami. Buck works himself to the bone when Christopher goes missing while in his care.

As the tsunami waves recede from Santa Monica and Los Angeles, Captain Nash and the members of Station 118 continue to rescue the members of Station 136 and other survivors from the Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel before it collapses into the water, while Athena and the LAPD attempt to corral any criminal activity happening because of the aftermath of the tsunami. Buck meanwhile continues his frantic search for Christopher after he fell off Engine 136 during the recession of the water back out to sea. Maddie makes contact with Charlie, a girl who is using her drone to look for her friend Reggie, the artist she was speaking to on the Santa Monica Pier before the Harbormaster kicked her off before the tsunami appeared. Using Charlie's drone, Maddie locates the apartment complex they got multiple 911 calls regarding where the people the callers were speaking to went silent and caused concern for the callers as to if they were alright.

As Nash and his crew rescue several victims of carbon monoxide poisoning from the apartment complex Maddie had Charlie scope out with her drone, they find that the water is contaminated with gasoline from a leaking tanker truck, and with a sparking lamppost, they are standing on a ticking time bomb.

Athena is patrolling an evacuated neighborhood when she spots a van apparently looting a house. Confronting the two, she finds that they were rescuing animals, as they are part of the West L.A. Pet Rescue. At Athena's suggestion to leave the remaining animals for the ASPCA to pick up, the guys prepare to leave, while Athena soon locates Station 136 Fire Captain Cooper, pinned under a vehicle by his arm, and is forced to perform an amputation of his arm to save him and get him to the triage center at the VA hospital.

With Nash and his crew, luckily, Chimney recovers a couple of USPS mail vans to help evacuate the victims before the tanker explodes when the lamppost falls over and ignites the gasoline-laden water, but as they withdraw, they find their way blocked by a massive group of survivors that need assistance as well.

At the triage center, the first responders continue to treat wounded before Athena arrives with Captain Cooper, minus his amputated arm, and Buck tries to find Christopher, only to assume Christopher didn't make it and is forced to tell Eddie the grim news. Maddie meanwhile continues her duties at the 911 center when Buck calls regarding Christopher and believes he's KIA, and Buck sees Eddie, fearing how he'll react if he tells him Christopher is dead, and Maddie decides to come down to the triage center herself.

When Eddie finds Buck, Buck is about to tell him Christopher is dead, only for Eddie to see Christopher having been brought to the triage center by Nash and his crew, alive. When Buck sees Christopher made it, he is overwhelmed with emotion, before he collapses from his wounds and dehydration, and tended to by Nash and Hen.

As the sun rises over the remains of Santa Monica and Los Angeles following the tsunami, memorials and missing posters are put up to honor the victims, young and old, while Athena, Bobby, and the rest of the first responders also regroup and recover as well. Charlie says her goodbyes to Reggie as Maddie was told by Sue that he didn't make it as they found his drowned body as she adds his poster to the memorial wall and is comforted by Maddie over her loss. Hen and Chimney are with the couple as they renew their vows with their wounded son a witness with them as he recovers with his mom and dad, the 118 and Bosko check up on Captain Cooper as he's recovering, minus his lost left arm, possibly hinting at his honorable discharge from the LAFD due to being WIA, and life in Los Angeles and Santa Monica begins to recuperate from the tsunami and rebuild.

As for Eddie, Christopher, and Buck, Eddie makes it clear that there is no one else he wants to look after Christopher for him than Buck, even after what happened with the tsunami.
