- Cannot Spit It Out: Angela is unable to say a word on Terry Colby's doorstep until he finally shoos her away.
- Downer Ending: Elliot is unable to keep Shayla alive, and Vera gets away with everything.
- Foreshadowing: When Vera tells Elliot before the prison break that the "universe has big plans for them", turns out he wasn't joking and he meant it.
- Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Shayla was killed shortly after the kidnapping. Nothing Elliot did during the episode could have saved her.
- Wham Episode: Shayla is kidnapped by Vera's men and murdered.
