    Ashrah
The demoness seeking redemption was happy to finally have a home and a place among Liu Kang's monks of the Wu Shi Academy. Her sister, Sareena, still suffered under Quan Chi's control, however. With Liu Kang's help, Ashrah rescues Sareena and breaks Quan Chi's control over her. Together, they found the Order of Light and now fight in Earthrealm's defense.

    Baraka
With the knowledge that the new Empress, Mileena, was also a victim of Tarkat, Baraka hopes that she will help him and his fellow victims after eons of being quarantined and ignored. With the help of Syzoth, Mileena's emissary to the Zaterrans, Baraka meets with her. Mileena readily provides relief to the Tarkatan colony so that Baraka and his people no longer live in squalor, a great boon while the search for a cure continues.

    Ermac
As the collective souls that took over the vessel known as Ermac struggle to suppress King Jerrod, they realize that without Quan Chi, they would die when the spell binding them together fails. They break Quan Chi out of Outworld's prison, only for the sorcerer to betray them and attempt to enslave them again. Ermac emerged victorious in the ensuing Kombat by embracing the powers of each individual soul that comprised them. Now, they must find a way to reconcile the souls within them, or risk self-destruction...

    General Shao
General Shao's rebellion had been routed, but his war did not end with his imprisonment: the treacherous general would escape, and would begin rebuilding his army to overthrow Empress Mileena. He finds his army in those who had been left disenfranchised by the royal family.

    Geras
Geras sets about to the task of protecting the New Era from the possibility of invasion from other timelines, a new danger for which he could never have prepared. While the New Era's defenses against other timelines was restored, the newly intertwined nature of the timelines granted Geras the ability to watch over them all.

    Havik
Havik's defeat had left him disfigured and the people of Seido still suffered under the yoke of his realm's tyrannical rule. Rain, however, approached him: the former High Mage of Outworld needed sanctuary and Havik offered in in exchange for overthrowing Seido's rulers. With a mighty tidal wave, Rain destroys Seido's capital, sweeping away its rulers and helping Havik achieve his goal: a realm of true freedom, true anarchy, true chaos.

    Johnny Cage
Johnny had wondered why he had been chosen as one of Liu Kang's champions. As it turns out, Liu Kang wants Johnny to be his emissary, teaching the people of Earthrealm about the other realms. Rather than dump all of the info about the realms at once, Johnny goes for a more gradual approach, easing Earthrealmers into this new knowledge through a cinematic universe, with movies, games and other media.

    Kenshi
Kenshi finds a new ally in his fight against his former Yakuza associates in Special Agent Jackson Briggs. They are soon attacked by Shang Tsung, who hoped to claim the sword Sento for himself. Jax is shocked to learn that everything from Johnny Cage's new films was real, but takes it in stride and, along with Kenshi, founds the Outworld Investigation Agency.

    Kitana
With the realm's army fractured by Shao's revolt, Outworld was in a precarious state. At Empress Mileena's behest, Kitana took command of Outworld's military to purge Shao's loyalists and rebuild their military might. While her soldiers were slow to trust her, she would ultimately win their trust by leading them to a decisive victory against Shao's insurrectionists.

    Kung Lao
Kung Lao is charged with mentoring a new generation of Earthrealm's champions. Among his most promising disciples is Shujinko, a youth with the power to absorb and copy the abilities of others. Unfortunately, Shujinko's skills were matched only by his ego, and he would become a threat to the realms due to Kung Lao neglecting to teach him humility. Thankfully, after Shujinko's powers and memories are taken from him, Kung Lao can try once more to train him into a worthy champion, this time with Raiden's aid.

    Li Mei
With Mileena ascending to the throne, Li Mei, having redeemed herself, is placed in charge of the imperial police. Sadly, Li Mei finds herself ill-suited to the bureaucracy and red tape her new appointment forced her to contend with. Eventually, she resigns from her post and returns to her true calling: protecting the people of Sun Do directly as First Constable.

    Liu Kang
As Geras had warned him, reclaiming his powers as the Keeper of Time had deadly consequences for Liu Kang: he was no longer immortal. Even with a vastly extended lifespan, Liu Kang would need to appoint a successor to protect his New Era after he is gone. There is only one suited for the task: Geras, whose connection and familiarity with the Hourglass, paired with his lack of ambition and temptation, made him the perfect successor.

    Mileena
At Baraka's request, Mileena visited the Tarkatan colony, only to be shocked and appalled at the conditions they lived in. Realizing her mother's treatment of the victims of Tarkat was a grave error, Mileena made it her mission to see them receive the compassion they deserved, to which end, she would reveal to her subjects her own affliction. With Kitana and Tanya's help, even the most ardent of her skeptics were moved to support her as Outworld's new empress.

    Nitara
Quan Chi's defeat condemned the vampires of Vaeternus to a slow death from starvation and Nitara's advocating for the foul sorcerer made her responsible for finding new feeding grounds or else facing exile. Nitara, however, had a better plan: instead of conquering new realms, she would capture enough people from the other realms to breed like cattle, ensuring Vaeternus has its own renewable food source. Only a few thousand mortal were needed to start this new plan and who would miss so few people…?

    Omni-Man
Omni-Man was taken from his timeline by Shang Tsung to make into an ally, but he was too blinded by his ambition to notice that Omni-Man's true loyalties were to his home planet of Viltrum. With his help, the Viltrumites began conquering the other timeline and annexing the realms together under their rule, but ultimately, Nolan knew that at some point he would have to return to his Earth to finish his mission, which would mean facing his son Mark once again.

    Peacemaker
Peacemaker was assigned to hunt down Eclipso, who cast a spell to send Peacemaker to the Mortal Kombat universe to get rid of him. However, what Eclipso didn't realize was that Peacemaker felt right at home in the other timeline. He felt that the world of Mortal Kombat was in desperate need of peace, and he was just the right guy for the job.

    Quan Chi
Though Ermac freed him from the Lei Chin cell, Quan Chi still felt like a prisoner. With no allies or a way to regain power, Quan Chi sets his sights on overthrowing Liu Kang as Keeper of Time and taking control of the Hourglass. Learning the dark magic needed to complete this quest may take a lifetime, but Quan Chi still believes that someday becoming omnipotent will make it all worth it.

    Raiden
Meeting his divine counterpart from the previous era made Raiden question why he was born mortal in this New Era. Liu Kang tells him about the past version of Raiden, how he was a steadfast defender as Earthrealm's patron deity, but also possessing a dark side that made him harsh and unforgiving. By making Raiden mortal, he would not go down the same dark path. Raiden, however, believes the kind of fury his past counterpart possessed was needed to protect the realms. The Shaolin could not teach him to harness this rage…but the new grandmaster of the Shirai Ryu, Scorpion, can.

    Rain
After escaping Outworld following General Shao's failed coup, Rain joined forces with Havik to overthrow Seido. Though successful, he now felt naught but despair at having given up his position as Outworld's High Mage by listening to Shang Tsung and subsequently killing so many people in partnering with Havik. Unable to live with this guilt, he returns to Outworld to submit himself to Mileena's judgment.

    Reiko
With General Shao free from prison, he and Reiko began recruiting a new army to overthrow Empress Mileena. This peasant army was ill-suited for warfare, so Shao changed tactics and use a superweapon to take over: Onaga, the Dragon King! Having been imprisoned beneath the mountains by Shao's ancestors, the Dragon King's fury had stewed for countless eons. Onaga would need to be tamed and though he will likely die in the attempt, Reiko readily accepts the task of bringing this monster to heel…

    Reptile
Syzoth didn't think he'd be welcome again in Outworld, but Empress Mileena made him an offer to serve as emissary to the Zaterrans. With the Empress's blessing, Syzoth returned home a hero, his shapeshifting mutation no longer an object of scorn, but a badge of honor. It wasn't long, however, until Syzoth learned that shapeshifting was not a mutation unique to him, but possessed by many. The Zaterran leaders had killed all known possessors of this trait, however. With this revelation, Syzoth vows to find out who is carrying out this policy of discrimination and stop them!

    Scorpion
After defeating Titan Shang Tsung, Bi-Han and the Lin Kuei he had led astray hunted Kuai Liang and his allies down, forcing them to flee to Japan. There, Kuai Liang reunited with an old friend, Harumi Shirai, who agrees to help Kuai Liang found a new group to protect Earthrealm and oppose the Lin Kuei. In time, Kuai Liang and Harumi fell in love and married, and Kuai Liang named their new clan in her honor: the Shirai Ryu!

    Shang Tsung
After his capture and arrest, Shang Tsung escaped from prison and fled for his homeland. His attempt to sail away were cut short by a fierce storm and Shang Tsung found himself on a mysterious island that was once home to powerful mages. Within the island's caves, he found a Well of Souls, a font of power that can amplify Shang Tsung's magic once he learns how to harness it.

    Sindel
Gravely wounded in the war against Titan Shang Tsung, Sindel dies. Her soul, however, was absorbed into Ermac by the spirit of her husband, Jerrod, who held control over Ermac's body. The souls within Ermac all had their own ambitions and desire to assume control. Together, Sindel and Jerrod would need to fight in order to quell the souls within Ermac and truly fight as one.

    Smoke
The founding of the Shirai Ryu was proving difficult due to a lack of initiates. One night, however, Tomas has a fateful encounter with a youth who attacked him. The young boy was a street urchin, forced to steal as a matter of survival. The boy reminded Tomas of himself before joining the Lin Kuei, and he, in turn, would take this youth into the Shirai Ryu and train him. The boy's name: Hanzo Hasashi.

    Sub-Zero
Bi-Han turned his back on Liu Kang and made the Lin Kuei independent, free to pursue their own goals and ideals. Bi-Han envisioned the Lin Kuei as rulers of their own nation, but they would need an army and territory to realize this dream. Such an army was found in Shang Tsung's soldiers of stone, the "Dragon Warriors". This would require vast amounts of magic and Bi-Han's lieutenant, Sektor, advised caution, lest they draw Liu Kang's attention. Instead, they would turn to science and technology, building an army of cyberized soldiers…

    Tanya
Tanya had heard about how Li Mei failed to protect Emperor Jerrod and resigned in disgrace rather than accept punishment, but having met the former Umgadi, she now doubts what she had been taught about her. Tanya would look into the matter, and find that the Umgadi's leadership of the past were truly to blame, with Li Mei made a scapegoat for their failures. Learning this, Empress Mileena wanted the Umgadi disbanded. Instead, Tanya convinced her to try to reform it, and thus was appointed the Umgadi's new leader.
