Recap / Marvel's Spider-Man S1 E5: "Party Animals"

Go To

The episode begins with Spider-Man battling another Slayer while trying to convince Norman, who's talking to him over the phone, to postpone whatever he's talking about until later. Spider-man eventually disables the robot by tearing out the wiring in its neck, although it self-destructs afterwards. After the robot explodes, it's revealed that Alistair had been controlling it remotely under Norman Osborn's supervision.

Once Peter reaches the school, he learns that Harry had been trying to tell him that he was cleared of the charges pressed against him, and Max decides to hold an event to celebrate. The other students mostly propose science-themed events, but Max latches onto Peter's comment that at least they won't be dancing and, to everyone's chagrin but his own and Aleksei's, settles on holding a dance on Saturday night. However, Norman doesn't want his son to leave Osborn Academy.

Raymond attempts to join the Oscorp Academy as faculty, and uses his hybridization project to convince Norman to give him another chance. He accidentally pricks Aleksei with a serum hidden at the bottom of his ring, causing him to mutate into the Rhino. A fight ensues where the Rhino is eventually subdued, and the students begin to work on a serum to restore him after realizing his identity. Peter-as-Spider-man leaves to check on Gwen Stacy, who left soon after the battle, but at her home he's attacked by the Jackal. Gwen realizes the Jackal's true identity from footage on the household computer and uses the newly-finished serum to restore him.

In short order, Aleksei is cured and Raymond is arrested. As the episode closes, Peter helps Gwen clear up the mess in her home, and consoles her as she come to terms with the actions her uncle was capable of.

This episode contains examples of:

  • High-School Dance: Horizon High decides to hold one to celebrate Harry being cleared of his charges — much to the other students' chagrin, as the school has never held such an event before and they're entirely unprepared for it.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: When Spider-man disables the Slayer robot, it announces that self-destruct has been engaged and begins counting down from one minute with a big digital display, forcing Spider-man to scramble to dispose of it before it explodes.
