Partway through the trial of a doctor accused of molesting young boys, the doctor accuses detective Brian Cassidy, who had been midway through his testimony, of being racist. Cassidy's subsequent outburst results in a mistrial, but Cassidy later shows up at Benson's apartment covered in blood and with the doctor in question dead. Stone and Benson's relationship gets off to a rocky start, all while a determined Homicide detective (Kylie Bunbury) investigates Cassidy for murder.
Tropes
- Big Brother Instinct: Reggie killed West because he molested not only him but also his younger brother Sammy.
- Freudian Excuse: Cassidy tells Stone that he was molested by his little league baseball coach when he was a child.
- Nepotism: Probably. Fin points out that the father of Detective Holiday, the detective in charge of the West investigation and with whom the squad butts heads, is the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Cassidy's outburst in the courtroom ruins Stone's case against Dr. West, which results in a mistrial.
- Title Drop: After the real killer is caught, the now-vindicated Cassidy meets with Stone and begs him for his job back as well as lenience for the real killer since this is what he will be doing for the rest of his life.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Cassidy gets this from the victims of the parents as well as his colleagues after his outburst. Olivia gets one from Stone after finding out she had been keeping Cassidy at her apartment, possibly obstructing justice.
