Recap / Law And Order S 22 E 18 Collateral Damage

Go To

Price and Maroun prosecute a cult leader over the death of one of her cultists, only to have difficulty proving that the supposed cult leader leader committed any specific criminal misdeeds. This difficulty is compounded when the prosecutors discover that the 'leader' may in fact be just another coerced subordinate, and that the real cult boss may be even harder to connect to the victim's death.

  • Bittersweet Ending: Due to Elfont's death, Davis's plea agreement is pulled and she is sentenced to twelve years in prison. While she bore some measure of responsibility for Newhall's death, Elfont had more, and she was his victim too. If he hadn't been killed Davis would have been given a walk in exchange for testifying against him, but his death made that impossible.
  • Cult: Jocelyn Davis runs one on behalf of Zach Elfont. Ava Newhall was one of its members, but she died after Davis had her branded.
  • Ripped from the Headlines:
    • The Lodestar cult is explicitly compared to the real-world NXIVM cult.
    • Jenny Newhall, a national news reporter, having an affair with one of her co-workers, which ends up ruining her career and marriage, is based on Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes' affair on Good Morning America, revealed to the public a few months before the episode aired, which ended with both breaking up with their partners and being fired from the titular program.
