Recap / ITV In The Face S 1 E 1 Gus Honeybuns Tears

Go To

Franchise: South West England
Companies: Westward, TSW, Westcountry, Carlton

Provides examples of:

  • Artefact Title (In-Universe): Some in the South West region continue to refer to the channel by the name of the original franchise holder, Westward, even as the channel changed hands and names over the years.
  • Dada Ad: As noted by the episode, the logo for TSW and its use on-screen is incomprehensible and difficult to fit with the concept of the South West. Even its own creator admitted that it doesn't really mean anything - he just wanted something which stuck in people's heads.
  • Explosive Breeder: Gus Honeybun's parents, who got very busy during the 31 years Gus spent on Westward/TSW.
  • Fight Magnet: Peter Cadbury, Westward's chief executive, who could "pick a fight in an empty room with his own thumb."
  • Foreshadowing: The first mention of TSW’s response to the post-Broadcasting Act 1990 franchise round is accompanied by a still photo of Rupert Murdoch and Margaret Thatcher, who both go on to play larger roles in later episodes of the series.
  • Meet the New Boss: TSW had actually been providing the South West's ITV service for four months before it officially took over on screen without anyone noticing, and after a brief blast of initial fanfare, continued in much the same fashion for the rest of its tenure.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: TSW originally started out trying to project an image more in line with LWT, but that didn't last very long.
"Fortunately, it didn't take long for TSW to realise they were actually broadcasting from a brickwork studio in the middle of Plymouth, not a metal and glass edifice in the heart of London's West End."
  • Tagline: One image shows a tagline used by TSW, "We bring it all home to you."
  • The Stinger: There’s a post-credits clip of Loeki the Lion playing the trumpet.
