Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 36 Hercules And The King For A Day

Go To

Hercules and Phil visit Satyrville and his mother, Cacophone, who always mentions his brother Sal and his achievements, but never Phil's. Meanwhile, the normally lackadaisical Demeter, goddess of the seasons and harvest, is infuriated when she learns Pan, king of the satyrs, has skimped out on offerings to her in favor of a temple dedicated to himself.

Deeming it a smite-worthy offense, Demeter gives him until the harvest festival to properly credit her; otherwise, Nemesis will be sent after him. Pan then hits on the perfect fall guy and names Phil temporary king in his stead; Phil can impress mom, while Pan gets off the hook with Demeter. Will Hercules be able to convince Pan to pay proper respects, or will Phil feel the sharp end of Nemesis' blades?

This episode contains examples of:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Demeter is caring and understanding towards most of her subjects, but when she learns Pan hasn't given her any offerings and created a temple praising himself, she gets so furious she blooms in fall colors and sends Nemesis after him.
  • Dirty Coward: Pan sets up Phil as a fall guy rather than actual deliver on the offerings that were rightfully owed to Demeter.
  • Parental Favoritism: Cacophone only ever talks about Phil's brother Sal and his accomplishments, making Phil think she loves Sal more. Then he finds out Sal believed she loves Phil more, because she only ever talks about him when Sal visits.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Phil is tricked into taking the fall for Pan after he pisses off Demeter. Nemesis would've very well killed Phil if Demeter hadn't shown up to clarify that he's not the actual satyr king.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Phil keeps trying to impress his mother, who only ever talks about the accomplishments his brother Sal makes. However, Sal shows up and reveals that their mom constantly praises Phil whenever Sal is with her. Their mom explains this is something she does to make sure neither of them gets too full of themselves, and then starts bragging about their cousin.
