In the beginning...
Tropes
- Broken Pedestal: Obviously, Annie with her father, to whom she looked up to for years as a loving man and a great writer. His later visit makes Annie realize the flawed man he was, from having an affair with her own teacher to how he wasn't that good a writer in the first place.
- Origins Episode: The majority of the episode takes place in flashbacks from Annie's childhood to her late teens as we learn about her family, The Ravening Angel story, Joy, and how it all connects together to the murder she's wanted for.
- Not What It Looks Like: Played for Drama. The murder that Annie is wanted for turns out to be for her father...only it turns out to have been an accident when she shoved him away from her down the stairs. It's clear that the police went with Rita's version of events, who presumably believed it to have been intentional.
- Pulling the Thread: When her father and Rita talk of having been seeing each other, Annie slowly puts things together, including Joy's age, and soon realizes that the two of them have been having an affair long before the death of Annie's mother...and what's more, that she knew that and quite likely a factor in her suicide.
- The Reveal:
- Annie is wanted for the (accidental) death of her father and for the attempted murder of his second wife which leads to the revealing...
- ...Joy is not Annie's daughter but rather her half-sister on her father's side, whom she kidnapped her after what happened to her [Joy's] parents.
- Wham Shot: Two are the very end...
- Annie at a bar Drowning Her Sorrows when a man sits next to her...and its Ace Merril.
- After finding the name of Rita Green in The Ravening Angel dedication, she researches the name and begins calling various numbers...the last scene of the episode is Rita (her biological mother) answering the phone.
