Recap / Avengers 11

Go To

Several members of the Avengers, including Hercules, Nadia "Wasp" Pym, Sam "Falcon" Wilson, Vision, and Jane "Thor" Foster, stand outside their tower and look at several personal possessions which they had kept in the tower and which are now strewn over the sidewalk. Parker Industries, which had been bankrolling the Avengers, has gone bankrupt; as a result, the Avengers headquarters has been sold and the Avengers evicted. Wilson complains about Peter Parker (who they do not know is Spider-Man) letting them down.

Parker then arrives in costume and the others fill him in on what happened, with Pym saying that Parker ruined his own company through faulty products and has now failed to give the Avengers the support he promised them. Vision is also critical, saying Parker should have at least notified the Avengers so they could transfer their equipment and resources out of his control. Parker plays along and insults himself, after which Vision and Wilson note that the Avengers need a new headquarters. They then all split up; Wilson takes Foster away to talk to her privately, and Vision does the same with Hercules. Parker is left alone with Pym, who begins collecting some dolls and other possessions. Parker says he knows she doesn't like him and asks why, and Pym says he rubs her the wrong way. Annoyed, Parker tells her to follow him and they leave as well.

Wilson and Foster fly to a building, with Wilson saying that being Captain America kept him on the ground more than he liked. Foster notes that Wilson returned the mantle of Captain America to Steve Rogers and asks if Wilson has regrets; he says no. He then asks how her cancer is doing and she says it continues to advance. Wilson says he once promised her not to tell the others about her cancer unless he felt it was inspiring her to go on a suicide mission, then apologizes and says he won't tell the others no matter what since it's not his job to determine how she lives. He then tells Foster that he needs her to lead the Avengers in his stead.

At a cafe, Vision tells Hercules that he recently learned he will live forever. He wants advice on how to deal with being immortal. Hercules, who has lived for thousands of years, notes that he doesn't see himself as unusually long-lived but instead sees humans as having especially short lives. He then gives his advice: to revel and find joy in life. He notes that the humans around him will grow old and die in what seems to him like a very short amount of time, and that this at first made it hard for him to bond with humans since they died of old age very quickly (from his perspective). He notes that he was lonely at first, but then decided to be joyful instead; rather than mourn his short relationships he tries to derive as much joy and revelry from them as he can. He says this keeps him sane, and it also allows for his friends to have their own sort of immortality since they will live forever in his memories.

Parker takes Pym towards a science fair so they can attend a lecture on genetics he thinks they'll both like. Before they arrive, though, they see a circus truck which has overturned and released dozens of animals. The two work together to catch all the animals and bond, though Pym says she still hates Parker (who she thinks is Spider-Man's boss).

Foster verifies that Wilson isn't retiring as Falcon and just wants to cede leadership of the Avengers, then says it's idiotic for him to think that he can't be the team leader just because he is no longer Captain America. She says he seems to think that his teammates defer to the Captain America identity or uniform. Wilson says he wants to be out of the spotlight, and besides, the 'face' of the Avengers is supposed to be a 'power player', which Rogers is but he isn't. Foster insists that they follow Wilson not because of his costume but because of his character, experience, and the skills he learned from Rogers. She also notes that Parker is the face of the team, regardless of who the leader is. Wilson accepts this and says he'll stay as the team leader.

Wilson is then alerted to a supervillain that the Avengers need to stop. He tries to alert the team, but none of their communicators work anymore, so he's stuck. Foster summons a bolt of lightning to round up the team. The others arrive and Wilson gives the team battle orders, noting how he's adjusting them since they no longer have their gear. He then leads the team to attack the supervillains.
