Basic Trope: Children generally have American accents, even if adults such as their parents have the correct accents for their nationality.

  • Straight: Even though Alice and Bob are British, their son Charlie speaks in an American accent.
  • Exaggerated:
    • The story takes place in 1300s England, before America was even discovered, and yet all of the children speak in American accents anyway for some reason.
    • Alice and Bob's family are of a variety of nationalities, and all of the adults in that family speak in their appropriate accents, but the children only speak in American accents.
  • Downplayed: Charlie does speak in a mostly American accent, but there are occasional British-accented speech patterns to his voice.
  • Justified:
    • Charlie was sent to America for safety due to an event such as a war at a young age. Upon returning home after the danger had passed, he'd naturally developed an American accent.
    • Charlie has an American accent because his parents faked one until he was seven, wanting a child with an American accent.
    • Alice and Bob came to America before Charlie was born, and he picked up an American accent from his peers.
  • Inverted: Charlie's parents are clearly shown to have American accents, but Charlie himself has an unexplained British accent.
  • Subverted: It turns out that Alice and Bob aren't actually British either - they were just faking an accent.
  • Double Subverted: But their real accent is Irish, which Charlie also doesn't have for some reason.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Charlie has a British accent just like his parents do.
  • Enforced:
    • The kid who plays Charlie can't do a British accent, and they also can't find any children with British accents, so they just let him keep his usual accent.
    • It's a kids' show made in America, and they want the kids to be more relatable to the children in the audience.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice and Bob would rather either teach Charlie how to speak British English properly or send him to America.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Charlie, who speaks in an American accent, gets charged with identity fraud after learning that his parents are British.
  • Reconstructed: Charlie decides to move to America so he can socialize with the country's locals better, while Alice and Bob stay in England and do their chores.
