Basic Trope: If the player goes to the opposite direction of their starting point, they may find a hidden reward.

  • Straight: One of the levels of Troper Tales contains a bonus item that can be found if you turn back instead of moving forward.
  • Downplayed: You can turn around from your starting point in one level, but it doesn't get you anything but an Easter Egg.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every level in Troper Tales has a secret path with goodies of varying value. Completing them all unlocks a Brutal Bonus Level which in turn unlocks the Golden Ending if you take its secret path.
    • The very first level has a hidden item, if you obtained it, that will turn into a Disc-One Nuke or even a Game-Breaker.
  • Justified: There is a secret bonus put in the opposite direction of your starting to point to encourage the player to explore each level and try everything in order to find all the bonuses.
  • Averted: There is no Offscreen Start Bonus in Troper Tales.
  • Subverted: Troper Tales has an area that has an instant kill death trap with a bonus item within it if you take the "normal" path, and that the correct level path is right behind your starting point which has no bonuses.
  • Double Subverted: Well, actually there is one bonus but it requires you to fulfil a very specific standards in order to find it.
  • Inverted:
    • If the player goes the opposite direction at the start of Troper Tale's first level, they unlock the game's bad ending or a Non-Standard Game Over.
    • There is a secret level bonus but it only appears after the end of the level if the player ignores the level goal.

    • Press Start to Game Over
  • Lampshaded: "Congratulations! You walked the wrong way! Here’s a secret prize!"
  • Defied: If you try to go the other way, the game won't let you or you end up leaving the level.
