Basic Trope: A character experiences something unnatural and assumes it's due to a substance they're taking.

  • Straight: Alice comes back home from the drugstore and sees a ghost floating around her door. She assumes it's just her having had too much drugs.
  • Exaggerated: Alice assumes the entire plot of the movie is a hallucination of hers due to her drinking too much.
  • Downplayed: Alice sees something a bit unusual, and ponders if that's because she was taking a bit too much drugs.
  • Justified: Every time Alice saw something supernatural, it turned out to just be her having hallucinations, so she doesn't see a reason to assume it's different this time.
  • Inverted: Alice sees a ghost, and assumes it's because she didn't take any drugs.
  • Subverted: Turns out, Alice was just hallucinating.
  • Double Subverted: Alice's hallucination was actually a vision of what's to come, part of it involving that ghost she saw.
  • Parodied: Alice sees something incomprehensibly ridiculous. She just assumes she smoked too much... but she only did so for ten seconds.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice keeps going between thinking what just happened was real and thinking it was just because she had too much of those drugs.
  • Averted:
    • Alice never saw anything.
    • Alice doesn't take any substances.
  • Enforced: The writer needed a good reason for the protagonist (in this case, Alice) to doubt whatever is going on at first, and the only thing that came to mind was about being intoxicated.
  • Lampshaded: "You know, you seem to assume that things happen because of your drugs..."
  • Invoked: The ghost died from drinking in their past life, and deliberately went to Alice's house to make Alice reconsider taking so many drugs after seeing the ghost, in an attempt to save her life.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice, after some thought, changes her mind, and goes to assume the ghost was indeed real.
  • Discussed: "You know, I don't feel like drinking in my life. I might see some weird and scary things."
  • Conversed: "Why are these characters stupid enough to assume everything is because of that beer?"
  • Implied: Alice's letting her husband, Bob know that she's quitting drinking because she just saw something odd.
  • Played for Laughs: The ghost responds to Alice's assumption with a long winded speech about how they are in fact real... but all they're saying to prove it is extremely irrelevant things.
  • Played for Drama: Alice just can't help but keep drinking. As she sees worse and worse things happen, she keeps blaming it on her wine, but she just can't stop...
  • Deconstructed: Think the Played for Drama one, only it eventually results in her death.
  • Reconstructed: Before it's too late, she quits drinking. When she still sees things, she then has a reason to believe everything is real, allowing her to live to see the end of whatever is going on.
