Go To

Basic Trope: The loser of a competition has to leave town.

  • Straight: Lance, a noble Warrior Prince, plans a swordfight against Grant the villainous Blood Knight. If Grant wins the duel, then Lance will have to leave his hometown of Southwold.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Lance will be forced to leave the entire country.
    • Not only will Lance have to leave Southwold, but he can never return there in his lifetime.
    • Lance's wife and kids will also be forced to leave Southwold.
    • Lance, his entire family and descendants, will be forever forbidden from going near Southwold.
  • Downplayed: If Lance loses, he won't be able to come near Grant's castle anymore.
  • Justified: Lance is representing the nobility and fame of his family. If he loses to Grant, then he'll be shunned by the town for his failure.
  • Inverted: Southwold is a crappy town that the residents hate. If Lance loses, he has to stay there while Grant leaves.
  • Subverted: Although Lance loses the battle, Grant now sees him as a Worthy Opponent, and calls off his threat.
  • Double Subverted: Grant just wanted to give him a bit of false hope before he kicks him out for real.
  • Parodied: There's a specific town where all the residents live only there because they lost duels against Grant.
  • Averted: Nobody has to leave town for losing a competition.
  • Enforced: The arc of Lance living in Southwold was going on too long and tiring viewers, leading to lower ratings. The writers had Lance lose the duel so they'd have a reason to have the show go somewhere else.
  • Lampshaded: "Lance, if you lose this duel, you'll have to leave our fair town of Southwold!"
  • Invoked: Grant proposes that Lance leave the town if he fails the duel.
  • Exploited: Grant sharpens his swordfighting skills in preparation for his fight against Lance, hoping that he can drive him out of town for good.
  • Defied: Lance declines the duel.
  • Conversed: "I don't think Lance has ever lost a duel on this show. It's not like he's gonna have to leave town."
  • Implied: Lance talks to someone who recently moved into Southwold. When Lance asks him why, he says something about losing a duel.
  • Played for Laughs: Lance hates Southwold and can't leave soon enough. So it's not like losing and needing to leave is that big of a deal for him.

Good sir, I propose a swordfight, by the honor of King Dude! The Loser Leaves Town, so put your utmost effort into our duel!
