Basic Trope: The hero of a journey spends all of it looking for something, only to find they had it the whole time.

  • Straight: Bob spends the entire book looking for the Crystal of Berito, only to find he had it the whole time.
  • Exaggerated: Bob spends the entire story looking for something to do, and at the end he realizes he's omnipotent.
  • Downplayed: Bob spends the first half of the book looking for the Crystal of Berito, realizes he had it halfway through, and he does something more important in the second half.
  • Justified: The crystal is invisible, and it somehow made its way out of where Bob regularly keeps it.
  • Inverted: Bob looks for the Crystal of Berito in his pockets throughout the story, and finds it somewhere else at the end.
  • Subverted: Bob finds the Crystal of Berito in his pocket, but it's just a replica he got from a store.
  • Double Subverted: It turns out the store had the Crystal of Berito, and they sold it to him under the guise of a replica.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob spends the entire journey looking for his elbow.
    • Alice tells Bob that the crystal he was looking for "wasn't lost in a desert or some messed up journey, it was right here all along" while gesturing to his heart.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob is seeking the Chosen One capable of wielding the holy sword - in his process of searching he gets in great shape, makes the right decision often enough and saves enough people, and learns to fight well enough that the sword lets itself be drawn by him. However he specifically "tried the obvious" at the start of his journey just to be sure it was real and it wouldn't budge. In a way he did find the Chosen One but only after failing to do so.
  • Averted: Bob finds the Crystal of Berito at the end of the story.
  • Enforced: "We need to give some sort of message about how what you need is what you have." "How about the character realizes he's already got the main goal with him?" "Genius!"
  • Lampshaded: "You know, I bet Bob already has that crystal and just hasn't noticed yet."
  • Invoked: The protector of the Crystal of Berito takes it from its hiding place and slips it into Bob's pocket while he isn't looking.
  • Exploited: Bob is aware of this trope, so he takes the Crystal of Berito out of his pocket at the end of the third chapter.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: "Bob, I noticed the Crystal of Berito sticking out of your pocket." "Wait, what?"
  • Conversed: "Why is this guy looking for the crystal? He's got it right there!"
  • Implied: Bob is a side character, and tells Alice "You'll never guess where I found-" and then gets interrupted.
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed: The dedicated search for it is ultimately what allows him to wield the Crystal of Beriti with full power. He could have used it from the start sure but he would prove too weak when he actually needed it.
