Playing With / Dead Pet Sketch

Go To

Basic Trope: A character accidentally causes the death of another character's pet, so they buy a replacement to fool the other into thinking they are alive.

  • Straight: Alice loses her attention of Bob's dog, Charlie, for a few seconds, and he ends up getting hit by a car. Alice then proceeds to buy a similar looking dog in order to fool Bob into thinking that he is still alive.
  • Exaggerated: All of Bob's pets die because of Alice's carelessness, and Alice has to do the same thing for each one.
  • Downplayed: Charlie merely falls from a height and gets injured, so Alice covers up his injury to look good.
  • Justified: Alice doesn't want to deal with the ensuing drama if she tells Bob the truth.
  • Subverted: "I'll just buy a new pet and tell Bob that Charlie is fine! …wait a minute, that wouldn't work. He'll probably figure it out because the new dog's behavior could be slightly different. I guess I'll tell the truth…"
  • Double Subverted: "…never mind. After all, there are so many playful Golden Retrievers like Charlie, aren't there? This will be easy!"
  • Inverted: Bob tasks Alice with putting down Charlie after he is infected with a deadly illness. However, Alice can't bring herself to do it, so she pretends that Charlie is dead to avoid bringing Bob the pain of doing it himself.
  • Parodied: Alice does a very complicated plan of covering up everything, which includes training the dog within a few hours, paying witnesses not to say anything, and also making them confirm her cover story. However, the whole plan falls apart when Bob notices that the tail of "Charlie" has a white tip, rather than being completely blonde.
  • Averted: There are no accidents regarding Charlie, and he is returned safe and sound to his owner.
  • Defied: Alice decides to tell Bob the truth about his pet dying.
  • Zig-Zagged: ?
  • Enforced: "We need a wacky scenario regarding Alice's dishonest nature. Let's have her deal with Bob's dog Charlie in some way."
  • Lampshaded: "Hopefully, you don't lose attention of Charlie and end up in some plan to fool me with a different dog. Got that?"
  • Discussed: Alice is quite a dishonest person, to be honest… I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to fool someone with a different pet after she caused the other one's death.
  • Conversed: "Alice is quite a liar… if I accidentally caused a pet's death, I would just admit it right away."
  • Invoked: Alice is a sociopath, and wants to test out her cover up abilities by trying to cover up a pet's death, and intentionally lets Charlie run into traffic.
  • Exploited: A local newspaper decides to use the incident as a gossip story, in order to get more people into reading it.
  • Implied: Bob mentions "that one Charlie incident" while talking about why he doesn't trust Alice.
  • Deconstructed: Alice and Bob have a falling out, with Bob being angry that Alice thinks that Charlie could just be easily replaceable, while Alice is angry that Bob isn't being grateful enough to appreciate the fact that she cared about Bob's care for Charlie.
  • Reconstructed: After Bob grieves over losing Charlie, he gets attached to the new dog. Alice and Bob apologize, but their relationship is permanently damaged.
