Go To

Basic Trope: Giving someone a lecture about their behavior as punishment.

  • Straight: When Billy is caught sneaking junk food even though he was told not to, his dad lectures him by explaining that it's bad for his health and he has to eat his vegetables first.
  • Exaggerated: Billy's dad is known to lecture his son for anything bad he does, and these can last upwards of an hour on a good day.
  • Downplayed: Billy's dad tells him he shouldn't have done it, but doesn't go further.
  • Justified: Billy's dad works as a teacher, so these kinds of lectures come naturally to him.
  • Inverted:
    • Billy gives his dad a lecture on his parenting, explaining that he should let him eat candy more often.
    • Billy's dad's lecture is actually encouraging him to behave worse.
  • Averted: Billy's dad stops him from eating the candy and nothing more.
  • Lampshaded: "Whenever I do something I'm not supposed to, my dad always gives me these boring lectures."
  • Invoked: Billy's mom points out he keeps doing this misbehavior, so his dad really makes it stick what the potential consequences are.
  • Defied: Billy's dad has more of a "let them learn the consequences firsthand" approach.
  • Discussed: "Man, my dad's gonna talk my ear off if he hears I was sneaking candy!"
