Basic Trope: A pilot's skills are useful or necessary in the story.
- Straight: Bob finds Emperor Evulz' fortress, but it's so high up he needs Alice's piloting skills to reach it.
- Exaggerated: There are many separate story arcs and all of the main characters wind up knowing a pilot no matter how implausible.
- Downplayed: Bob could get to the fortress by climbing, but it would be far more dangerous.
- Justified:
- Alice is part of the crew, and is the only one that knows how to fly a plane. Either that, or she's a pilot for hire.
- (for exaggerated) The pilot is The Narrator, and they're recording an anthology of their adventures of being hired by many people around the world.
- Inverted: Alice the pilot makes things more difficult.
- Subverted: Bob thinks he's going to need Alice's help to get to Evulz' fortress...but then he discovers a teleporter.
- Double Subverted: However, during the final battle, Evulz throws Bob off the fortress to plummet to his death, and Alice, who is watching, catches him.
- Parodied: Bob tries to get Alice's help in raiding the cookie jar.
- Zig Zagged: Pilots are sometimes useful and sometimes more trouble than they're worth.
- Averted: No pilots appear in the story.
- Enforced: The author is an aviation buff.
- Lampshaded: "Always make sure you know a pilot. They're very useful."
- Invoked: Evulz purposely builds his fortress in such a place that only a pilot could reach it.
- Exploited: Only a pilot can reach Evulz' fortress, so Evulz begins killing every pilot in the land.

- Conversed: ???
