• Philip visits his grandfather and is surprised to see his fountain is similar to the one at Istana. Yu Mei explains: Philip's mother was forbidden from coming home after she married his father, so his father built her a replica of the fountain.
  Yu Mei: ...Your father asked me to describe the fountain you see outside to him, how it looked, even how the water sounded. He told me to be as detailed as I could, and then he built another one so that she would have something from her home, from her youth.
• William brings Philip every new gadget he gets, hoping Philip will be interested in it too. Finally Philip realises this is William's way of bonding with him, and he has unintentionally rebuffed his half-brother. So when William brings him a new camera, Philip shows him how to work it.
• A tragic example: after years of bitterness, Wu An and Noel finally put aside their differences after William's death. They reflect sadly that now both of them have outlived their children.
