Heartwarming / The Art of Racing in the Rain

Go To

  • Eve feels ugly because of her shaved head and sickly body, but Denny reassures her that he doesn’t care what she looks like. He sees Eve for the person she is and begs to live with her at her parents’.
  • Enzo’s relationship with Eve. At first he is jealous of her for taking away Denny’s attention and for being a person instead of a dog like him. However, he begins to warm up to her when Eve gives birth to Zoë. When Eve wishes to be alone with her newborn, she allows Enzo to stay and confides in him her fears and insecurities. Enzo feels proud to be included in “Eve’s inner circle” and promises Eve to protect Zoë. Enzo begins to consider Eve family as much as Denny to the point he becomes angry when Eve, Denny, Zoë, and he are split apart due to Eve’s hospital stay. Despite this, he tries to avoid bringing too much attention to himself so Denny can focus on taking care of Eve and Zoë. When Eve is sent home for hospice care, one of her nurses locks Enzo in the garage. Eve dismissed the nurse and lets Enzo sleep with her. She confesses to Enzo her fear of dying and begs him to protect her while she sleeps. Enzo takes his job seriously and guards Eve from “the demon” until Eve’s parents wake up and take care of their daughter. Just before Eve dies, she confides to Enzo she is no longer afraid to die and asks him to take care of Denny and Zoë. When she does die, Enzo became so upset that he temporarily lost himself to his animal instincts to shield himself from grief.
  • Enzo’s relationship with Zoë. Before she was even born, he is devoted to the little girl. As jealous and angry he was at Eve, he never expresses it because of Eve’s pregnancy. Once she was born, he promises Eve to protect Zoë. As Zoë grows into a child, he spends his time playing games such as angels (a game in which Zoë and Enzo pretend they’re angels) and Enno-Fetch (Zoë’s way of saying “Enzo fetch!”). He becomes sad for her when she acts too old for her age despite only being four or five and is angry on her behalf when the Twins want to sue for custody of her. Just before Eve dies, he promises Eve to take care of Zoë.
  • Denny’s estranged father apologizes to Denny for disowning him for leaving home after high school and gives him money to pay for his legal fees.
  • Luca Pantoni offers a Denny a prestigious position at Ferrari Headquarters, test driving Ferraris and teaching clients how to drive. The reason? Years ago, Luca lost his wife and almost “died from grief,” but a man working at Ferrari Headquarters offered him a job test driving Ferraris and became a mentor to him, saving Luca and his children. Luca succeeded his mentor, and after he died, vowed to do the same for another grieving person.
