Heartwarming / North by Northwest

  • Roger mentions his two ex-wives many times throughout the film, showing that, despite being divorced twice, they still hold a place in his heart. At the start of the film, he tries sending one of them candy. At the end, we find out why they divorced him: they thought he led too dull a life, rather than anything they might have done to each other. As Roger remarks to the Professor, he doesn’t want to disappoint his ex-wives (as well as his secretary, Maggie, his mother, and several bartenders) by getting killed as a result of the movie’s plot.
  • The relationship between Eve and Vandamm, as she was attracted to him by his charm, until she was tasked into working for the government against him. It’s through her then we find out Vandamm’s first name, Philip, showing how much she cared for him until she realised who he really was.
    • The feeling was mutual, too, and when Leonard spills the beans to Vandamm on Eve’s duplicity, Vandamm is angry enough to consider murdering Eve.
  • The relationship between Roger and Eve too, even though it was faked by Eve towards Roger at first because she was working with the government and working against him as Vandamm’s mistress. Later on, though, she develops genuine feelings for him as she clearly looks guilty for helping organise the cop-duster attack, and when Roger surprises her by showing up alive and unharmed afterwards, she hugs him in relief that he survived, as evidenced in the forest scene when she calls him “my darling decoy”.
  • When Roger thinks Eve works for Vandamm as his mistress, he uses some nasty words towards her, driving her to tears. When he realised her true allegiance, he admits he used some (in his own words) “some pretty harsh words” and apologises.
  • The final scene. Roger and Eve survived the climax on Mount Rushmore, they’re now married and the film ends with a Big Damn Kiss (and the train going into a tunnel).
