A series that subjected the audience to as much Nightmare Fuel as possible inevitably had its Heartwarming Moments once the subjects of each episode were rescued.

  • Even the infamous theme tune closed with a much quieter, calmer rendition of the signature three-notes referring to the title, followed by a few comforting piano notes.
  • The opening sequence in its various forms usually gave the audience a hint that all would turn out well in spite of the featured content.
  • The testimonies of the people who were rescued, their friends/family/rescuers and Michael Buerk himself once their ordeals were over.
  • The original title sequence concluded with a little girl being returned to her mother's arms after firefighters had rescued her from being trapped between two walls.
  • The eight-year-old girl who repeatedly called 999 when her mother was paralysed by electric shock. That episode had been about children making false 999 calls; her call was given a low priority because it was from a child. She was presented with a medal for bravery.
