Headscratchers / The Car

  • It's a minor thing, but this always bugged me about the movie. Why is it that after half the Santa Ynez deputies get killed by the Car, to say nothing of the attack on the kids at the track, we don't see the State Troopers or the like get called in? I know that the real explanation is simply that the filmmakers didn't have the money for it. But in real life, how many people can get massacred in such a small town before someone calls for some help?
    • The state police were likely not called in for several reasons;
      • Since the Car came from outside town and managed to kill numerous civilians and several cops, there would be an investigation as to why they weren't called earlier, after three civilians had been killed. They may have been able get away with calling them in after Police Chief Everett is killed, but calling them in after The Car went on a rampage may look suspicious.
      • The state police likely would have told them that a maniac mowing people down shouldn't require sending them out and that they should be equipped to deal with it.
      • The Car is very difficult to track, seeming to disappear into the desert without a trace numerous times and only emerging to kill so not wanting more fatalities than they already had may have been another reason.
      • They likely were, in fact, ready to call in the Staties by the time Wade catches up to the Car but once the car was found to be Immune to Bullets, they figured they were on their own because if their bullets did absolutely nothing to the Car, bullets fired from automatic weapons would probably make no difference and calling in the Army and their bombs, missiles, and anti-tank rifles to take out one car would be incredibly expensive and the department's compentancy would be called into serious question, hence why Amos and his stockpile of explosives were used instead.
