• In this version, Hal doesn't die like in the book and accuses John Thornton at a bar of allowing his dogs to run off, making him lose his fortune. In the original book, Hal drowned along with Charles, Mercedes and his dogs, but what happened with Charles and Mercedes here? There's an alternative version of the climax had Hal revealing that he lost his dogs and his sister, but in the finished film he doesn't mention neither Mercedes or Charles at the bar scene, so what happened with them?
  • It’s ambiguous enough that the viewer can decide their own Head Canon, however with the dogs gone Mercedes and Charles most likely either left or they perished.
