  • this is especially noticable in the older comics, but unless it takes place on a sunday every time, how the hell can one man (paw) be the only one with a full time job and support a family of 10 (11 when granpaw comes scroungin') as far as im aware hen and joe were enlisted during the older strips, but seemed to be between jobs more often than not, maggie and daphne seemed not to work either (in the older eras this was more the norm) all of them including maw seem to scrounge from paw, and they get chippies and crap, also they have a holiday home, the But n' Ben, I know its a newspaper comic but still.
    • It is because when the strip started they were middle class. Paw would have been a relatively well paid job which would support the family. The cost of living was a lot lower back then too, don't forget.
    • It is generally thought that the strips do take place mostly on the weekend, with most of the adult children working during the week, Hen & Joe have been shown to do construction work when need be, working mostly cash in hand, one strip showed that Hen himself has some form of income as he went to buy a car (£200 used with a spanner, but still) as most well known strips are from a time where you worked what you could find straight out of school, rather than have a full time career, with only Paw shown having a full time job, working in a shipyard, until later strips had him retire, also as noted they were enlisted during the world war era strips, which was probably their main source of income, but, due to how often they were home they were probably reserves rather than full time soldier, which still paid rather well, and for a middle class family, they seem rather well off, despite having a veyr overcrowded house.
