  • They couldn't beam down equipment because it gets doubled and doesn't work. Why not beam down tons of really warm blankets, space suits, large pre-warmed rocks, etc?
    • Space suits have a lot of high-tech stuff that would also be rendered inoperable, at which point they aren't that useful. Anything else might have been rendered unusable by the transporter hiccup (blankets and stuffing appearing separately, pre-warmed rocks losing their heat in transit, etc). With limited time to devote to the dilemma, the point is that until it is fixed, the transporter cannot be used, so the landing party are stranded and in peril.
      • If you never do anything that might fail, then you'll never do anything, because everything you can possibly do has a chance of failure. If the blankets have their stuffing removed, then the team could just, you know, put it back in. There's absolutely no reason to believe that heat could be removed from rocks being transported. But the important part is that they lose nothing by trying, so the only reason not to try is that the writers didn't think of it.
  • It's nifty that Captain Kirk apparently keeps some makeup in his quarters, but I still can't help wondering why that gets dropped in so casually. Are the men of the 23rd century just likelier to wear makeup, or is Kirk an outlier? Or did a lady friend just forget it in his room? Or weren't we supposed to think about it at all?
