Headscratchers / Near Dark

Sooo...after they ride off in the van, what do the cops do? They are in a van, and cop-cars are very fast. Why is their escape handwaved as soon as they drive away?

• Maybe the extended shoot-out damaged all the cop cars beyond pursuit capability.
