Headscratchers / Better Off Dead

• Is the K-12 run a symbolic name referring to Lane learning everything he needs to know to grow up (K through 12 being the American grades before college and K-12 being common shorthand for that)? I've seen this movie many times and suddenly wondered that when I saw it written down. I'm not sure if I'm right about the meaning or just read way too much into a single thing in the movie.
  • The K12 is a fictional ski slope. It's not K through 12. It's in reference to K2, a very dangerous mountain.
    • It's a play on words. It's referencing 'K thru 12' AND K2.
• Why doesn't Johnny the paperboy just approach Lane's parents for his two dollars - plus tip?
  • Probably they've been better at avoiding him. Or that Lane has been a pushover. Or the paperboy knows that he has been breaking their garage windows and won't get his two dollars.
    • The latter makes more sense. Seeing that he's seen as a bit of a loser by everyone due to Beth leaving him, with even Barney Rubble asking if Lane's okay with him dating her, it may be likely this is the case. When it comes to the climax of the film, Lane dominates the K12, Roy and the Paperboy all in one moment, making him no longer a loser.
• Beth leaves Lane for Roy because Roy is more popular... but is he, really? Outside of his own of his clique, no one else at the school seems to care for him. When it's announced that Lane is going to race him, the whole school cafeteria cheers and many of them pat Lane on the back or try to. And they all seem pretty pleased when Lane beats Roy at the end.
  • Considering how arrogant Roy is, most people are probably bullied by him and his clique like Lane is, and see Lane standing up to Roy as an underdog tale.
