- A lot of the dinosaurs' names are given silly, often Double Entendre-ish translations in the second edition. For example:
- Leptoceratops is said to mean "Subtle horny eye, from its flirtatious nature".
- Heterodontosaurus is given the meaning "Hetero tooth-lizard, after the male's tendency to bite other males".
- Ankylosaurus becomes "Crooked lizard, from its flawed character".
- Coelophysis is given the fake meaning of "Welshman", based on the Greek words for "sex lying in a valley"
- Euoplocephalus is "Well-tooled point, in reference to its fertility"
- Apatosaurus is "Bastard lizard, due to the difficulty in establishing parentage"
- Some of the illustrations present bizarre situations that only really make sense in context.
- The second edition's entry for Deinonychus shows a pack of them playing poker using pieces of meat as chips ("for high steaks", as the caption describes it)
- Two children having a tug-of-war with a pillow that their pet Incisivosaurus seems eager to join in.
- A dozen Microraptor making a complete mess of a kitchen.
