• The idea that Malmordo's face was so hideous makes it seem odd that anyone would willingly give him aid and comfort, even out of human decency. Remember, however, that that was a severe facial contortion of his that could be "turned on" or "off" at will, and that his "normal" face was much more humanlike, making it less unlikely that the Roma would have given him refuge with them.
