  • In the first chapter of the book, Basil says of Dorian that he feels he has given his whole soul to someone who treats it as though it were a flower to put in his coat. Later, when Dorian apathetically reveals the desolation of his own soul to the heartbroken Basil, who falls on the floor and begs for him to redeem himself, what does Dorian do with the flower in his pocket? He takes it out... and crushes it.
