The comic's plot, backstory, and major events were planned and developed years before Breath of the Wild came out. The game ended up mirroring and giving additional plausibility to events and elements from the comic:
New Ordon is built on top of the ruins of the long-gone Hyrule. In Breath of the Wild, Hyrule was laid to waste 100 years prior and is now mostly empty.
A core theme of the comic is identity, and with Mike it involves conflict and a stifling of self from his old-fashioned parents. While Zelda isn't transgender in Breath of the Wild, her story involves her conflict with her father stifling her true self.
