  • The novel is set in 1844. Which means there's an awful lot of misery ahead for the characters. (Though Francis and Fanny are rich enough to support themselves and their entire families, including Martin and his family, so things wouldn't be quite as dire for them as for the poorer people.)
    • Worth noting, though, that Trollope wrote and published the novel in 1848. The epilogue takes place at least three years after the main story and doesn't mention the famine, so it's possible he intended the story to be set in an idealised alternate universe where it never happened.
