• If Tavore had the Blood Dagger of Mael the whole time, why didn't she use it right when the Bonehunters first ran out of water? The thing created a whole freshwater lake on its own- more than enough to get them through.
  • There are several reasons for this according to the book:
    • She wanted to make her army learn true empathy for the Crippled God by teaching them what it meant to suffer.
    • Using the dagger is implied to be very unpleasant.
    • Tavore is a brilliant general but is implied to be an awful people person. Her pushing the army on for days after first animals, and then people, started dying until they mutinied was probably a miscalculation on her part — she didn't realize that not everyone had her clarity of purpose, or would understand the lesson she was trying to teach them.
