At the end of the novel, Emma and Charles' daughter, Berthe is sent to live with an impoverished aunt who sends her to work in a cotton factory. At Berthe's young age, the job she likely has is one of a Mule Scavenger where one has to crawl under the active heavy machinery to gather bits of cotton so they don't cause jams in the equipment. This job is noted as one of the most dangerous in history as often fingers, hands, and heads, would often be caught and crushed in the spinning wheels of the machines. Not only is Berthe orphaned, destitute, and forced into child labor at the end of the novel, said labor is liable to leave her seriously maimed, if not killed.
