The monks' refusal at the end to erase Marinette's memories is portrayed as another punishment for her. But what would happen if they did? What would it be like for Marinette to wake up in a world where her family and friends turned away from her; the whole of Paris, the whole of France, the whole WORLD hates her for actions she remembers nothing about. After all, everyone else will not forget this and will not forgive her just because she forgot everything. In a way, the monks did her a favor by forcing her to remember what she was being punished for and why she had to hide.
