Why did the King lock up all the monsters instead of killing them? Because if he'd killed them, new ones would have spawned. Keeping them in the kingdom will exhaust the limit of how many mobs can spawn, effectively making the kingdom mob-free.
Why didn't the Prince at least try to jump off the missile? Because even if he survived, he'd still be stuck in the Nether.
