Ardat-Yakshi Monastery

Fail Shep makes a pit stop at the Citadel, where he makes the following mistakes:

  • Authorizes a transfer request from an engineer whose brother joined Cerberus. The engineer was ordered to fight Cerberus, and she didn't want to risk killing her brother. The Alliance is rather strapped for engineers though, and her absence results in losses for one of the fleets, slightly reducing my EMS.

  • Forced a cafe owner to give security footage to a C-Sec officer who didn't have a warrant. These leads to unrest or something and reduces my EMS.

  • Used his Spectre status to force C-Sec to ignore arms smuggling. This leads to chaos, reducing my EMS and, combined with the various other stuff I've done on the Citadel, nullifies the Citadel Defense Force War Asset.

The asari want Fail Shep to investigate an asari monastery that serves as the prison for law-abiding Ardat-Yakshi. The monastery sent out a distress call and the commando teams previously sent to investigate went missing. The asari want Fail Shep to blow up the monastery using a bomb the commandos had with them to ensure that the AYs won't threaten the galaxy.

The monastery has been attacked by Reapers, who are turning AYs into incredibly powerful husks called Banshees. Samara is also there to protect her daughters Rila and Falere, who, like Morinth are AYs. The squad encounters the corpse of an asari commando named Tashya Porae.

The squad and Samara run into Falere, who tells them that Rila was captured by the Reapers and begs them to save her. When Fail Shep tells her that he plans on blowing up the monastery and killing all the AYs, she panics and runs off using her NPC only biotic flying powers. Samara follows her.

Fail Shep catches up to Samara and Falere at the Great Hall, which is also where Rila and the bomb are. Rila was in the middle of being turned into a Banshee when her family found her, so it's too late for her. She offers to stay behind and detonate the bomb while the other escape. Samara and Fail Shep agree, but Falere has to be dragged out of the monastery.

And that's when things go to hell... again.

The Justicar Code does not allow AYs to be outside the monastery. Samara is obligated to kill her own daughter. In a complete Tearjerker of a moment, Samara kills herself to save Falere. Falere is devastated at the loss of her family and Fail Shep doesn't help when he puts a bullet in her head.

The Asari Councillor is grateful for Fail Shep's help and sends a small commando team to Hackett as a reward,

Fail Shep figures that since he's been out of jail for a while and hasn't heard from Jack, she's probably moved on. So he asks Liara out.

I'm starting to wonder if the Normandy's Memorial Wall is going to run out of spaces for new names.

Ah, so that's why Samara lived: so that her Justicar Code could completely and utterly muck things up. I've cleared the first two games, but I've never gotten this far into the third Mass Effect game, and a reason for her survival in a failure run has been a mystery to me until now. The results were certainly intriguing, if nothing else.

Best of luck in the missions to come!

Apologies for the delay. I've been feeling a bit under the weather lately. I'll try to post something tomorrow.
