This mission concerns the genophage. I realize that I have not actually explained what the genophage is. For those who haven't played these games, the genophage is a Sterility Plague unleashed on the krogan by the turians and the salarians to end the violent Krogan Rebellions. Thanks to the krogan's absurdly high birthrate, the species isn't in danger of going extinct, but it has turned the krogan into a race of nihilists.
On the the actual instalment: Mordin reveals that he was involved in a project to stop the krogan from adapting to the genophage. The project succeeded years ago, but Mordin's former teammate and student, Maelon, has recently been kidnapped by Blood Pack mercenaries and has been taken to the krogan homeworld of Tuchanka.
Fail Shep and Mordin arrive on Tuchanka and are ordered at gunpoint to go and meet the chief. Fail Shep isn't interested and seeks out the head scout, who tells him the location of the Blood Pack's base.
Mordin discovers that the Blood Pack are forcing Maelon to cure the genophage. Fail Shep and Mordin fight there way through the krogan, bypassing a perfect opportunity for an Exactly What I Aimed At moment among the way. After killing the leader of the Blood Pack, Weyrloc Guld, our heroes discover that Maelon is there of his own free will. He has come to believe that the genophage was a horrible crime that must be rectified. Mordin executes Maelon and, after consulting Fail Shep, destroys the genophage cure data.
